3.2 A Natural Businessman: Washington’s Expansion

Washington’s ability to see the bigger picture prompted him to diversify his crops to better ensure the safety of his budding estate and family fortune. He saw an opportunity in wheat and began to split his property’s cash crops from primarily tobacco to reflect both crops. Early successes with his risk on wheat prompted him to continue to expand into other ventures, including horse breeding, weaving, whiskey, and flour milling.
